I'm returning to an old favorite today. You can see it's been loved a lot over the years.
Stop by Penny Klosterman's blog for the round up today.
JAM
"Spread," said Toast to Butter,
And Butter spread.
"That's better, Butter,"
Toast said.
"Jam," said Butter to Toast.
"Where are you, Jam,
When we need you most?"
Jam: "Here I am,
Strawberry, trickly and sweet.
How are you, Spoon?"
"I'm helping somebody eat,
I think, pretty soon."
You just have to love the sound and the rhythm and the humor!
I WANT YOU TO MEET...
...Meet Ladybug,
her little sister Sadiebug,
her mother, Mrs. Gradybug,
her aunt, that nice oldmaidybug,
and Baby--she's a fraidybug.
THIS IS MY ROCK
This is my rock,
And here I run
To steal the secret of the sun;
This is my rock,
And here come I
Before the night has swept the sky;
This is my rock,
This is the place
I meet the evening face to face.
May you find your rock and meet the evening face to face.
I've got a jelly poem today, too! It must be something in the September air! However, "I Want You to Meet..." is my favorite of the ones you've shared.
ReplyDeleteI'm about ready for September air and some Jam to go with it!
DeleteThanks for sharing poems from an old favorite. All three were delightful. "oldmaidybug" made me laugh :-)
ReplyDeleteYep, such a fun line in a fun poem.
DeleteToast and a rock by the sea. What a lovely book it must be. :-)
ReplyDeleteKeep that rhythm and rhyme going!
DeleteDoraine,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this post! David was my friend and mentor. He used to visit my elementary classroom every year. My second and third graders loved his poetry. We even held a big 85th birthday celebration for him in my classroom. With the help of our art teacher, my students made illustrations of their favorite David McCord poems and I taped them reciting those poems. At his party, we did a slide/tape presentation of his work. He was really touched.
I wish his publisher would reprint some of his books.
Elaine, what a wonderful way to celebrate David! I'll bet he was delighted.
DeleteLove this post, & hearing about Elaine's memories, too, Dori. I've read "I Want You To Meet" more than once to my granddaughters. These are wonderful children's poems!
ReplyDeleteThose grands are so lucky to have you reading them poetry!
DeleteDavid McCord has been a favorite of mine, too, for quite awhile. Love that conversation between Toast, Butter, Jam and Spoon! Thanks for posting these, Doraine.
ReplyDeleteYep, quite a conversation!
DeleteMeeting the evening face to face is lovely. And that breakfast conversation...charming!
ReplyDeleteI love David McCord's poetry! Love that we got to meet the Ladybug family - even wee "Baby--she's a fraidybug." Thanks for sharing. =)
ReplyDeleteOh these are fun--especially the ladybug/oldmaidybug/fraidybug!
ReplyDeleteLove all three of the McCord poems you shared, but I think my favorite is This Is My Rock. There's something very special about a rock of one's own.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing these three. I can see how JAM would be fun to act out all the parts with young children.
ReplyDeleteI have a beautiful ornate silver jelly spoon I got from my great grandmother. The thing must be over 150 years old. Thank you for stirring this memory.
I have a tickling of a memory about "This is My Rock"...I think I remember looking for my own private spot for viewing sunsets. If that's not a true memory, then it's something I certainly WOULD HAVE done.
ReplyDeleteLight, fun....but the precise right words in the precise right way. Best kind of poetry. Thanks for sharing. Now, I need to go make some toast with butter & jam.
ReplyDeleteI love the playfulness and music of David McCord's work. Thanks for greeting me with it this morning, Dori... face to face. It's a lovely way to start my weekend.
ReplyDeleteI just came from Diane's jelly to your jam! These are so fun! David McCord is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThese poems remind me of what fun poetry can be, how simply delightful when we allow our little-child-inside to come out and play. Thank you, Doraine. xo
ReplyDeleteThese put such a lovely and whimsical color on the day. Thank you!
