Poetry Friday: Valentine

Welcome to Poetry Friday. Our host today is Katie at the Logonauts.

Thinking of Valentines Day next week and how much my hubs loves to shower his girls (me, daughters, daughter-in-laws, granddaughters) with cards and candy. I came across this poem in Poetry Speaks to Children. Enjoy!

Valentine
by Donald Hall

Chipmunks jump, and
Greensnakes slither.
Rather burst than
Not be with her.

Bluebirds fight, but
Bears are stronger.
We've got fifty
Years or longer.

Hoptoads hop, but
Hogs are fatter.
Nothing else but
Us can matter.

And now just for the fun of it...Donald Hall on what people say when they find out you're a poet.

  1. Nothing else but us can matter. Yes! And oh Alicia Ostriker... "I am afraid of my inner self." So so wise. Here's to not being armored. xo

  2. Love this video and the reasons why people are scared of poetry by Alicia Ostriker - I agree with all of them! Happy Valentines Day!

  3. Fun post -- loved the poem and video. So true of people fearing poetry and their inner selves/feelings.

  4. If I watched my grammar, I am certain it would swing like a trapeze artist until I dropped a preposition to the netting. I love that Valentine and his sense of humor. Delicious post. I'll be looking for that poem, the Erotic Crocodile.

  7. Such a fun post, Dori! In the video, Donald Hall reminds me a bit of Billy Collins with his droll take on himself.

  8. Fantastic post! I love the video. I have to admit that spoken poetry does scare me. I am very much a reader only. I don't look for or participate in readings. Not sure why. I think there's only one thing to do about this and that's to face it. I'll be spending some time looking for and watching poetry vids. This was a great start.
