Kiss the Wind

Wherever you are today and whatever adventure stands just beyond your doorway, may you sail with the wind!

blessing the boats
(at St. Mary's)

by Lucille Clifton

may the tide
that is entering even now
the lip of our understanding
carry you out
beyond the face of fear
may you kiss
the wind then turn from it
certain that it will
love you back   may you
open your eyes to water
water waving forever
and may you in your innocence
sail through this to that

  1. Hi, Dori. I carry this poem around in my wallet (!) Thank you for sharing it, and the interview with Grace. BTW, for those in Maryland and DC, Grace Cavalieri is a wonderful writing teacher, as well as being a fine interviewer.

  7. This is a new poem for me, and I love it. I'm gearing up for a sea journey with some apprehension, so these words will work just fine!
